CommunityWest offers HACC funded service providers training and workforce development activities that target the core skill requirements of HACC staff at all levels. All of our provision is aligned to the Wellness Approach to supporting HACC clients' abilities and independence.

We have identified the most commonly asked questions about our training and development activities. To view the answer to a particular question just click on the question bar below.

To be eligible to access funded places on courses, the staff attending must be employed by a service provider receiving HACC funding, and their employment must relate directly to the provision of HACC services.

Non-HACC funded service providers and non-HACC staff may still be able to access courses on a fee-paying basis, and should contact the Training & Workforce Development department to discuss their needs.

All CommunityWest courses are booked through our website, and confirmation of bookings, course reminder notices and course certificates are generated automatically through the website .

A Website User Guide is available on the website with easy to follow instructions to help people who are new to the booking process (see link on left side menu).

CommunityWest offers HACC specific training workshops in two ways:

  • Workshops offered through the online training calendar on specific dates at specific locations, by approved CommunityWest Training Providers.

  • Most workshops on the Training List are also available to HACC service providers on-site at their premises. Those listed as "on-site only" can only be booked as on-site workshops. Please refer to the on-site Workshop section for further information.

To ensure equity of access to calendar courses, service providers may usually only book up to 25% of the places available on a particular course. However, a service provider may request further places which may be given approval if there are spaces available.

Those seeking to make a booking may also opt to join a waiting list if a calendar course is full, in the event that there are cancellations. This facility also enables CommunityWest to assess levels of interest in courses and program additional courses to meet demand.

Some courses have specific booking conditions or are only available in some regions, please check the information in the Course Outline prior to booking.

Courses may only be booked by a member of staff designated by a service provider (usually a manager/coordinator ) who has registered through the User registration process and become the service providers' Booking Contact.

Other training outside of the workshops itemised on the Training List will be considered on a case by case basis.

Service providers must give five working days notice to cancel a place on a Calendar course, and a minimum of 12 working days to cancel an on-site Course.

Regional service providers who have taken up all or the majority of places on a Calendar course, must also provide a minimum of 12 working days notice if the withdrawal of staff is likely to lead to the cancellation of that course.

Failure to do so may incur a fee.

In the event that a course is cancelled by CommunityWest, we will endeavour to notify the Booking Contact on the same working day, and offer an alternative date.

CommunityWest endeavours to make its courses accessible and appropriate to all HACC service providers

  • by consultation on service provider's training needs and priorities, and
  • by delivering training to key locations in rural/remote regions, and throughout the four Metro sub-regions.

In order to ensure that we are able to continue to provide this diversity of training, we ask service providers to support calendar courses where possible. However we recognise that there are occasions when it may be more appropriate for a service provider to receive training on-site exclusively for their own staff.

There is ordinarily a limit of three on-site courses per financial year per service provider. However we are willing to consider requests for additional on-site courses where there is a need. This might include:

  • if service providers partner with each other or open their request to outside service providers,
  • larger service providers operating across several sites
  • a request supported by the service providers Contract Manager or Project Officer

Smaller service providers who do not have sufficient staff numbers to fill a course, may be able to access on-site courses or those listed as "on-site only" in the training list for example by:

  • finding another service provider to share an on-site event or,
  • asking CommunityWest to advertise for expressions of interest from other service providers interested in sharing a course (please specify this request in the comment box when completing the on-site booking form) or,
  • by demonstrating that their training needs cannot be met any other way.

CommunityWest has a list of Preferred Training Providers who deliver training in their areas of expertise. In addition we deliver the majority of the HACC specific courses using our own qualified trainers.

CommunityWest works closely with all our providers to ensure that their workshops demonstrate and support:

  • quality outcomes for HACC clients aligned to the WA HACC Program philosophy and guidelines, and
  • The Wellness Approach to supporting clients' abilities and independence.

CommunityWest does not fund the cost of travel or wages for participants attending training. These costs must be covered by the service provider requesting the training, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

For approved bookings on calendar courses CommunityWest will meet venue, catering and trainer fees and travel costs, with the exception of Senior First Aid training in the Metro area, for which a 50% fee is charged.

For approved on-site courses, CommunityWest will meet trainer's fees and travel only. Service providers are required to meet venue and catering costs, although small regional providers may seek assistance if their application is supported by their Project Officer.

Separate guidelines apply for coordinator level training in rural/remote regions which forms part of a HACC Coordinator Forum. Contact your Project Officer or the Training & Workforce Development department for details.

Volunteers are an important part of the workforce of many HACC service providers. CommunityWest is happy to discuss the best approaches to managing volunteer training.

CommunityWest endeavours to provide an efficient, high quality training service. We welcome all feedback from service providers on all aspects of our provision to assist in continuously improving our service.

If you feel our service fails to meet the desired standard please let us know by informing a member of the Training & Workforce Development department or by contacting the Training & Workfoce Development Management Manager jane.sterck@communitywest.com.au
